I had just finished a conversation at home, stating the utter importance of a supremely serene and sublimely clean kitchen in my life. In fact, I believe I could still hear the faint echo of my statement as I ventured upon my juicing journey and witness the massacre of vibrant blood orange sweetness and sticky red juice spray across my bright white kitchen cabinets and somewhat sterile subway tile.
Yes ~ bright red and super syrupy ~ splattered from here to there.
And so it goes…
Once cleaned and back in the saddle, I ventured into this 2 week journey of waiting…
…waiting for the MAGIC to happen.
I wish I remembered where I recently read my inspiration for this colorful and crystalline greatness. A beautiful magazine spread or an internet article, no doubt, led me to the sleepless eve before for beginning the process.
It’s simply really.
1 part sea salt to 3 parts fresh water, with a little bright flavor and zing.
Let it be.
Let is sit.
In darkness…in waiting.
Shazam!
Magic crystals.
Blood Orange Salt Crystals
1 cup sea salt
3 cups filtered water
1 blood orange
1 liter Mason jar (or any vessel – get creative)
1 chopstick (again, you can be creative)
2 feet of string
1 clean nickel or washer
Dissolve the salt in the water and add the juice, along with the zest and even some of the peel of the orange ~ carefully ensuring the vibrant red juice does not dispel about the area – the the Mason jar. Immerse the string into the jar, fastening the immersed end to a weight – nickel or washer – and secure with a chopstick.
Place in a cool, dark area, allowing plenty of air circulation, for 1-2 weeks. Wait (and maybe watch) for the gorgeous crystals to grow.
Imagine the possibilities of the amazing jewels.
That’s right. IMAGINE the possibilities.
Shazam is so for what I hoped!
Alas…the crystals failed. Nada. NADA.
How about YOU give it a try and see what you come up with? Let me know…
Oh no! white cabinets and blood oranges definitely is a tricky combination. Totally worthwhile though, in my opinion! I’d love for you to share a post at my link up tomorrow, if you’re interested! There’s an explanation on my main menu under ‘Tell ’em Tuesdays.’
